Broadband for All
Central Georgia Electric Membership Cooperative is excited to announce our plans to better serve our membership by introducing world-class fiber broadband Internet.
Our electric cooperative will be building a fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) network – the gold standard of communications transmission – over the existing electric distribution infrastructure that will take fiber directly into your homes and businesses and deliver reliable, high-speed internet services.
Where will the internet service be offered?
This FTTH buildout, encompassing 5,300 miles of fiber, will ultimately reach 100% of CGEMC’s members.
Conexon Connect will operate the fiber network and delivery broadband service to CGEMC members.
Who is building the network?
Central Georgia EMC is partnering with rural fiber broadband design and construction management leader Conexon, who will design and construct the FTTH network.
Construction across CGEMC’s 14-county territory will take approximately four years to complete.
When will the construction of the network begin?
Coordination and preparations for the network are already underway. Construction will begin in Monroe County. We are hopeful that the first consumers will begin receiving broadband service from our fiber network as early as Summer 2021.
Why is fiber internet access different?
A fiber-optic network sends and receives data at the speed of light. You will be able to stream high-definition media smoothly and quickly, have the data capacity to download and upload data at super-fast speeds and run multiple devices without decreased download and upload speeds.
If I already have fiber internet service, will Connect still be an option for me?
Yes. CGEMC’s fiber network can still be installed to your residence. We are committed to making our fiber internet service available to all Central Georgia EMC consumers.
Will my electric bill increase to pay for the FTTH network?
No. Electric rates will not be raised to subsidize the buildout or deployment.
How will I get FTTH services through the co-op?
Conexon will be the broadband service provider. The operational details around billing and subscribing for service are currently being finalized. We will communicate those details as they are finalized, but CGEMC will work to make certain Conexon is aware of every EMC member who would like to have service.
What internet packages will be available?
Conexon Connect will offer a package with a minimum of 100 megabits (Mbps) per second upload and download speeds (symmetrical service) for $50 per month.
In addition, Connect will offer a package with a maximum of 1,000 Mbps (1 gigabit) per second upload and download speeds for $80 per month.
Are there data caps with this service?
There will be no data caps or bandwidth throttling (intentional slowing or speeding of internet service) with this service.
